There is No Basement in the Alamo

We took a trip to San Antonio for a night.  We visited the Alamo on day one.  Pretty impressive!  The grounds were very extensive and beautifully landscaped

There is no photography allowed inside as they are trying to preserve it as a war memorial.  It was interesting to see how many people from VT and MA died in the Alamo.  A very bloody, horrific affair

The grounds

It is right in the middle of town, set back from the large hotels.  The told us that no shadows are allowed to cast over the Alamo because it is a war memorial

Nice hotel, originally a municipal building according to one of the Alamo guides (I resisted asking where the basement was on our tour)

This is Texas.  Although no shadows or photography are allowed in an attempt to preserve the solemness of the war memorial, vending machines full of junk are ubiquitous.  Kate had a melt down soon after this (in he gift shop), unable to deal with yet another refusal.

All was well in the end after the epic meltdown in the gift shop of the Alamo.  Kate pushed Alex back to the hotel and we all rested before our walk on the river

Luckenbach, TX

We took a day trip to Luckenbach, TX (between Austin and Fredericksburg).  Steve and I probably passed right by on our honeymoon.  It is basically a ghost town turned biker beer hall/ country music hotspot.  Pretty neat!
We picnicked and had a beer (there is a bar there)
And danced!  There was a stage and Kate was very eager to show off her ballet moves

Sort of like Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey

The babes

And then they saw the look.  Two bikers came up and climbed up on stage to check it out and Kate stared them down and said "only ballerinas are allowed up here"  Ha!  They laughed and got off the stage.

We finally convinced her to get down
and explore the grounds.  They do camp out concerts and weddings here,  Must be a ruckus!!

The bar.  They have live music everyday
